John 8:12- “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Have you ever tried to walk around your house in the dark? What is it like? Is it easy to get from one room to another or do you need to take your time and feel around to get your bearings to get to the room? Walking in the dark is not an easy task. Think about what it is like to get around in life with no light.
When I was in high school, I got a job being a tour guide in a cave. The word for this is being a “Spelunker.” I would take people through the cave and show them all the different formations inside the cave. It was always 68 degrees in the cave no matter what the temperature was like outside. It was a very interesting job and I got to meet a lot of interesting people from all over the country.
There was one particular part of the tour that I would introduce my tour group to “Total Darkness.” It was a spot on the tour which was at the deepest level below ground. I would advise the group of what I was about to do and then turn off all the lights. It was so dark that you literally could not see your hand in front of your face. It was impossible to take a step without hitting the cave wall or a fellow group member. It always made me appreciate the flashlight I had with me, so even if there was a power outage I could guide my group of 15 to 20 people out of the cave.
I think Jesus knew a little bit about darkness. He knew that we all were trying to walk around in life with the inability to see what was ahead for us. He knew that sin caused us to be blind and unable to function as God designed us to function in the world of total darkness. He came to earth as our flashlight to get us to a place where He could shine His light on us. He does this so we can always live in the light of His presence.
If you are struggling to know where to go and who intended you to be, then ask Jesus to come into your life and become the light in your life. He desires for you to never have to walk in darkness again. He longs to bring the light of His grace, mercy and truth into your life. He loves you and is the light of the world.
Prayer-Dear Jesus, I need you to be the light in my world so I don’t have to stumble through this life in darkness. Show me your will and purpose and lead me to fulfilling it. I need you and your word to lead and guide me through all of life’s dark places. I love you Lord and thank you for allowing me to walk in your light. In your awesome name I pray, Amen!
