Matthew 11:28-29- "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." (NIV)
Weary and burdened describes our culture today. When I ask someone how they are doing they seem to always say, "busy." Our society is running on fumes and seem to seldom find rest. We are on the go 24/7 and never have a moments peace. Even when we do sit down to take a break we have our smart phones to keep our minds occupied. Does this describe your life? Are you constantly on the go with no time to sit back and rest?
If you are like me, you find yourself in a constant state of hurry. You go to work then come home eat dinner and then off to a meeting or attempt get some chores done around the house. If you have children, then you are taking them to ball practice or music practice or to a friends house to work on a school project. Then you get up the next day and do it all over again. Life is hectice and most of us have no time to really rest.
One of the busiest persons in history was our Lord Jesus Christ. He always had someone pulling at his robe trying to get something from him. People who where sick. People who where hungry. People who knew of a family member who needed healing. Even some who were demon possessed. In several instances it was a person who died and needed to be raised from the dead. Jesus contantly had someone asking for something. And yes, we also see him teaching his disciples and debating with the Jewish leaders. And yet, he still spent quality time in prayer with his Heavenly Father.
Sounds like Jesus and us had a lot in common as it relates to being busy. How did he do it? Did he somehow extend the hours in a day from 24 to 30? Did he create more time or was it something better? In Matthew 11:29, Jesus gives us the keys to experiencing rest for our weary, burdened lives. He says, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your soul." The answer to the business of life is being yoked with Jesus. Being connected to Jesus in such a way that he carries our burdens that leads to weariness. Learning from Jesus how to make decisions, handle life's difficulties and order our day.
Jesus has a much better plan for living life than we do. He is able to help us know our purpose so we can say "No" to the things that are distracting us from his plan and "Yes" to the things that will accomplish our purpose in life. He will help us find the time to be with Him in prayer and Bible Study. He will give us wisdom with our schedules and planning our calendars. He will let us know when to give our burdens to him so he can carry them for us. He will be the one to give us rest.
Prayer-Dear Lord Jesus, Help! I need you to teach me how to find rest in this busy world. You said to "Come to you" to find rest. Today I give you my life and ask to be yoke with you. Help me learn the wisdom to maneuver through my day with the sense of peace, joy and rest that I see in your life. Thank you for carrying my burdens so I can experience your peace and find rest for my soul. In Your Name I Pray, Amen!
