"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (NIV)
It seems like everyone around us is worried and anxious about something. For some it may be the loss of a job. To others, the health of a family member, friend, or even themselves. Maybe it is a financial crisis that seems to have no solution. It could be political or social strife. Whatever it may be our culture is worried and anxious about something.
How do we handle life's challenges in a world of anxiety and worry? How can we have peace and assurance that everything will be, okay? What advise can we give to a friend that deals with the anxieties the future may bring?
Paul gives us the answer in Philippians 4:5-6. Prayer and thanksgiving. The first thing we need to do when facing difficult circumstances is to pray to our Heavenly Father. Take all our worries, fears, and anxieties to the only one who can help. He is the one who can give us the proper perspective on handling life. He has the answers and loves us so much that He wants to help. The second thing is to develop a heart of thanksgiving. When we come into God's presence and sense His power to help, we can't help but be thankful in knowing that He will take care of our situation.
When we pray and thank God for who He is, then He opens the door to peace and protection for both our heart and mind. Our thoughts and emotions get in line with God's word, and the result is the peace that passes all understanding. God will replace our fear with faith, our worry with hope, and our anxiety with peace.
Prayer-Dear Lord, Thank you for giving us the assurance that you are always with us and desire for us to walk in peace. Take all my worries and anxieties and replace them with your peace. In your holy name, Amen!
