John 4:28-29-"Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 'Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"
What a powerful encounter this Samaritan woman had with Jesus. She came to the well to draw water from the well in her water jars and found the living water and left her water jars behind. This is an incredible story about grace and mercy that changed a woman's life.
Do you remember the day you had an encounter with Jesus? Do you remember what you brought to your well? Do you remember what your life was like before receiving the living water that Christ offered?
When we meet Jesus we bring all our sin, brokenness, guilt and shame. We feel hopeless that nothing in our lives will ever change. We come to him weary and burdened by all the garbage the world has placed on us. We bring nothing to the table which can make any difference to ourselves or anyone else.
The Samaritan woman is the example of our lives as we struggle through life. She came to the well at noon, the hottest part of the day because she was isolated from the other women of the town. She had a sinful past of divorce and fornication. She had been beaten down by the circumstances of life. To her this day was just another day. But Jesus had a different plan for her.
In John 4:4 it says that, "He (Jesus) had to go through Samaria." Why? I believe it was because of this woman. Isn't it interesting that Jesus showed up at Jacob's well close to the same time as this woman. The Chosen showed this scene in a way I never saw it before. I always thought Jesus walked up to the woman while she was drawing water from the well. But, in the Chosen it shows Jesus waiting on the woman. Jesus wanted to minister to her and thus the reason he had to go to Samaria.
No matter what we have done in our lives, Jesus is waiting for us so he can transform our lives. Was the womans life transfored? What was the results of her encounter with the living God? She left her water jars behind because she had received living water. She went into the town of Samaria and testified about her encounter. She had a different look about her because the people listened and did not reject her. The result of this encounter was the people of the city came out to meet Jesus. Wow, a sinful woman turned evangelist all because of an encounter with the Messiah.
The thing for us to remember is that God is not looking for perfect people to accomplish His purpose for reaching the world. He is looking for those who are available and willing to tell others about their encounter with Christ.
If you have not had an encounter with Jesus, start by opening up his word and reading the book of John. Also, get plugged in to a bible believing church that can help answer your questions. You can also get plugged into one of our IRON groups on Tuesday or Thursday nights. Jesus is waiting at the well to have a life changing encounter with you.
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for always pursuing us. Thank you for showing us grace and mercy everyday. I want to know and follow you all the days of my life. Please help me become the person you long for me to be. In Jesus' Name, Amen!
